Failing to bear the agony of abject poverty amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, a man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at Dalbhanga village in Maheshpur upazila on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Wahidul Islam, 30, father of four children of the village and a van-puller by profession.

Quoting family members, sub-inspector Jamir Hossain of Maheshpur Police Station, said the family of six people has been facing food problem for the last one week amid the nationwide shutdown following the coronavirus pandemic.

They did not receive any relief from any organisation or government.

On Tuesday night, Wahidul took his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house.

Additional Superintendent (Kotchandpur circle) said the man was very poor and he took money from many people.

He might have committed suicide failing to repay the debt money, he said.
