Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is going to take a hard line from today to ensure social distancing in the capital.

The decision was taken at a meeting between Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and DMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam and senior police officials at the minister's Dhanmondi residence.

The move came as both the death toll from coronavirus and new cases of infections continued to surge in the country.

Bangladesh saw the highest number of deaths from coronavirus on Friday as 15 more people died from the virus infection in the last 24 hours till morning, taking the death toll in the country to 75.

Besides, 266 people tested positive for coronavirus during the period, raising the number of such cases in the country to 1,838.

At the meeting, it was also decided to form committees under the supervision of Awami League at 139 wards of the two Dhaka city corporations as per the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to distribute relief materials.

A police member will be there in each committee.

Presidents and general secretaries of Dhaka South and North city units of Awami League were also present at the meeting.
