Chattogram is inching towards becoming the country's new Covid-19 hotspot after Narayanganj as the number of infection cases surpasses 500 in the district.

With another 95 people found to be infected on May 13, the total number who have tested positive to coronavirus now stands at 515, while 26 people have died as of Wednesday.

"The infection rate is rising due to the inter-district communication between Chattogram and the rest of the country. Also, we are informed that businessmen from Narayanganj have come to Satkania, Bashkhali and Cox's Bazar," said Dr Hasan Shahriar Kabir, director of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) for Chattogram division.

"If inter-district communication is not stopped, the situation will become even more dire here," he added.

Recently, the government gave permission to open markets, shops and garment factories on condition that people maintain social distancing. Thereafter, the number of people and vehicles increased on the roads.

Earlier, mobile courts were deployed on the roads to ensure social distancing, but now they are not seen in the city. Hence, people are breaking social distancing rules.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ilyas Hossain said, "The control of ensuring social distancing is now in people's hand. They have to save their own lives".

District Civil Surgeon Sheikh Fazle Rabbi said, "Last March I warned that Chattogram will be at risk because of its geographical location. It seems that there will be a difficult situation ahead for the district."
