Covid cases reach a record high to 7,087, deaths 53
The number of cases now stands at 637,364 in the country
Bangladesh on Sunday saw an alarming growth in the number of Covid-19 cases as 7,087 people were diagnosed with the disease in the last 24 hours, which is the highest in a single day to date.
The new record came with an infection rate of 23.07%. The number of total cases now stands at 637,364 in the country with an overall infection rate of 13.32%, according to a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Besides, the country reported 53 more deaths from the deadly virus, taking the tally to 9,266 with 1.45% death rate.
Among the latest day's victims, 45 were men and eight were women. 52 of them died in different hospitals across the country, while one at home.
Thirty-seven of them hailed from Dhaka, nine from Chattogram, three each from Rangpur and Mymensingh and one from Rajshahi division.
Meanwhile, 30,724 samples were tested in 227 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 47,83,385 samples have been tested in the country so far.
Also, 2,707 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 552,482 with an 86.68% recovery rate.
The country's maiden cases were reported on 8 March last year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March.
Neighbouring India recorded 93,249 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours which took the nationwide tally to over 1.24 crore cases, the health ministry said. 513 fatalities were reported due to the infection which took the death toll to over 165,000.
As of Sunday, the number of Covid-19 infected people has risen to 131,468,234 worldwide and the fatalities now stand at 2,861,275, according to Worldometer.
