Covid-19 deaths surpass 30 for two days in a row

Covid-19 claimed 32 more lives across the country in the last 24 hours till Sunday 8am, while 1,355 people tested positive for the virus, according to information released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Sunday marked the second consecutive day when daily deaths from the novel coronavirus topped 30. On Saturday, 34 people died from the virus.

The country's death toll from Covid-19 now stands at 7,052, while the number of total cases stands at 490,533, reads a press release issued by DGHS.

A total of 12,748 samples were tested in 140 labs across the country in the last 24 hours. So far, 2,969,630 samples have been tested.

In the meantime, 3,393 more patients have recovered, increasing the tally to 420,896, at a recovery rate to 85.80%.

Of the deceased, 24 were men and eight women. Moreover, 19 of them were from Dhaka division, three each from Chattogram, Khulna, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions and one from Rajshahi division.

Thirty-one of the deceased died at different hospitals and one at home.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims' shows that 5,386 of the total deceased were men and 1,666 were women.

Bangladesh confirmed the first Covid-19 case on 8 March, and the first death from the novel coronavirus was on 18 March, the press release noted.

Global death toll rises to 1,613,868

According to the Worldometer at 06.35 GMT on Sunday, the novel coronavirus has killed at least 1,613,868 people worldwide since the outbreak of the virus in China last December.

At least 72,220,491 cases of the novel coronavirus have been registered globally, among which, 50,606,875 are now considered recovered.

On Sunday, 2,953 new deaths and 128,246 new cases were recorded worldwide.

The United States (US) is the worst-affected country with 305,082 deaths from 16,549,366 cases. Of them, at least 9,644,325 people have been declared recovered.

Brazil, India and Mexico top the list of the hardest-hit countries after the US with 181,143 deaths from 6,880,595 cases, 143,065 deaths from 9,859,615 cases, and 113,704 deaths from 1,241,436 cases, respectively.
