Almost 505 families of Ganakpara village of Shibganj upazila in Bogura have finally received rice under the government's food-friendly programme that was stolen earlier.

Superintendent of Police Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan inaugurated the relief operation on Sunday.

The police distributed rice among people in need of relief living in different villages of the upazila.

Police sources said they recovered 102 sacks of government rice – each carrying 50kg rice – from the residence of Md Mostafizur Rahman situated at Sayedpur union of the upazila on April 11.

The police applied to court for permission to distribute the rice among the poor and helpless. Senior Judicial Magistrate Asma Mahmud granted permission on April 23.

But she instructed to keep 50 kg rice as proof.

According to the list prepared by the police, 10 kilogrammes of rice and two kilogrammes of potatoes were given as relief from their own funds.

Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan said, "Due to this timely decision from the court, we were able to distribute the relief among the people as intended. Otherwise, the goods would just lie around and perish."
