Covid claims 31 lives more, infects 1,666 afresh

Bangladesh confirmed 31 more deaths from Covid-19 and 1,666 new virus cases in the last 24 hours till 8am on Sunday.
As a result, the total number fatalities caused by the virus stands at 6,838 while the total number of cases at 477,545 across the country so far, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest day's infection rate was 12.60% of the total daily tests. However, the overall infection rate till date is 16.68% nationally. The death rate stands at 1.43%.
During the 24-hour time, 2,552 patients were declared free of Covid-19, raising the total recoveries to 395,960 at a rate of 82.92%.
Among the latest day's death victims, 24 were men and seven were women. Only one of them died at home while others in different hospitals across the country.
Moreover, 18 of them hailed from Dhaka, three from Chattogram, two each from Barishal, Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh and one each from Rajshahi and Khulna divisions.
Meanwhile, 13,218 samples were tested on both RT-PCR, antigen test and GeneXpert test in 137 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 2,863,169 samples have been tested countrywide so far.
The gender breakdown of Covid-19 casualties shows that 5,231 of the total deceased were men and 1,607 were women.
In the last 24 hours, 1,079 people were placed in quarantine anew. Now, 41,905 people are in quarantine across the country, reads the press release.
During the same time, 155 Covid-19 suspects were taken into isolation. Now, 13,029 people are staying in different isolation units across the country.
The country's maiden cases were reported on 8 March this year, and the first death from the virus was reported 10 days later.
