Administration failed in Brahmabaria: Health minister
He says this sort of activity has exposed a lot of people to the risk of getting infected
Health Minister Zahid Maleque said the local administration failed to stop the mass gatherings at the namaz-e-janaza of Maulana Zubayer Ahmed Ansari in Brahmanbaria.
He also said the crowd of thousands of people has greatly harmed the initiatives taken to curb the coronavirus spread in the area.
He came down hard on the local administration on Sunday during the regular online briefing over the coronavirus update.
Maleque said that this sort of activity has exposed a lot of people to the risk of infection.
"The people who attended the namaz-e-janaza have already scattered in various areas. The administration should urgently see the issue," the minister added.
For mismanagement and failure to control the mass gatherings, the Police Headquarters have withdrawn Sarail-Ashuganj Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Masud Rana, and Sarail police station Officer-in-Charge Shahadat Hossain and Inspector (Investigation) Md Nurul Haque.
Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general of police in the headquarters, confirmed the information to The Business Standard today.
Earlier on Saturday morning, around one lakh people gathered at the funeral prayer of Zubayer Ahmed Ansari in Brahmanbaria's Jamia Rahmania Madrasa of Sarail upazila.
People came from different parts of the country ignoring the lockdown rules imposed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Afterwards, authorities asked the people living in Bertola and nearby villages of Sarail upazila to stay in home quarantine for the next 14 days.
