The district administration has announced a special lockdown for six unions of Noakhali Sadar upazila, including Noakhali Municipality, in an effort to deal with a fresh upsurge in Covid-19 infections in the district.
The lockdown restrictions will come into effect at 6 am on Saturday and remain in place until 11 June.
The unions are - Noyannai, Binodpur, Qadir Hanif, Neyazpur, Ashwadia and Noakhali.
Confirming the news, Md Khorshed Alam, deputy commissioner and also district magistrate, said all shops in these areas will remain shut at this time.
However, the restrictions will not be applicable to pharmacies and other emergency service outlets. Kitchen markets are allowed to operate from 8am to 4pm, complying with hygiene rules, while hotels and confectioneries are also allowed under specific circumstances and conditions, he added.
The decision came from a meeting of the district coronavirus control and prevention committee held at the DC office on Friday afternoon.
In Noakhali, 589 people have been infected with the viral disease in the last seven days, and four Covid patients lost their battle for life.
