Around 2,000 out of some 2,500 stranded Bangladeshis in India, who will start to return home by several special flights in phases from Wednesday, will be kept in institutional quarantine in Chattogram.
In the first phase, more than 300 Bangladeshis will come by a special flight on April 22 and then another group will come on April 25, according to Dr Sheikh Fazley Rabbi, civil surgeon of Chattogram.
"The schedule of the rest of the flights is not fixed yet. Some flights will directly arrive in Chattogram while some will reach here via Dhaka. Some of the returnees may come to the port city by road. A meeting has been held on the initial preparation," said the civil surgeon.
The higher authorities of civil and military administration and the officials of the Directorate General of Health Services held a meeting at Chattogram divisional commissioner's office on Sunday on receiving the returnees from India and keeping them in quarantine in Chattogram city.
ABM Azad, divisional commissioner of Chattogram, told the Business Standard, "The armed forces are looking after the whole thing. We will just assist them. The returnees will be kept in different rest houses, residential hotels and hostels of different public and private organisations. They are making the list of the hotels. They will fix the accommodation and food for the quarantined people as well as the cost of the entire arrangement."
A total of 10 organisations will be used as quarantine centres. The hostel of National Maritime Institute in Saltgola area of the port city has been requisitioned already as a quarantine centre.
Foysal Azim, principal of the institute, said, "Our institution has been requisitioned. The work to make it a quarantine centre with 200 beds has already started under the supervision of the army."
Besides, the hostel of Caritas, a non-government development organisation located in Probortok intersection area of the city, has been prepared as another quarantine centre. Saint Martin Hotel in Agrabad, Avenue Hotel in Lalkhan Bazar area and Lord Inn Hotel in CDA Avenue of the port city have been selected primarily to be used as quarantine centres.
