In the last 24 hours, 198 new police officials have been infected with Covid-19 in Bangladesh, confirmed Assistant Inspector General Mir Sohel Rana.
According to the Police Headquarters, among the 2,141 Covid-19 positive cops identified till Friday, 1,041 are members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The number of infected DMP members was 909 a day ago.
Most of the victims were field officers.
DMP sources said the infected include an additional deputy commissioner and an assistant commissioner as well as other field officers.
They said the DMP has taken all necessary measures for their treatment.
Meanwhile, according to data from various police units across the country, 1,152 law enforcers are in isolation on suspicion of having contracted coronavirus while 3,091 are in home and institutional quarantine as they had come into contact with the victims.
So far, 298 police members have recovered and returned home.
Sources at the Police Headquarters said all measures have been taken at the Central Police Hospital along with other dedicated hospitals for the police, to ensure proper treatment of the coronavirus-affected policemen as per a directive from the Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed.
