Bangladesh will receive one lakh doses of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine through the global COVAX programme in May, said Dr Robed Amin, spokesperson for the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

He made the remark at a regular briefing on Sunday, adding, "We are currently administrating AstraZeneca vaccine as the first and second dose of Covid-19 vaccination, however, we have several doses of vaccine left to be obtained from the Serum Institute on India (SII)."

Due to the tripartite agreement of Bangladesh, Beximco and SII, DGHS has asked Beximco Pharmaceuticals to procure at least 20 lakh vaccines from SII.

"The Chinese government will gift six lakh doses of coronavirus vaccine to Bangladesh as a token of appreciation," he added.

Dr Amin further said that talks are underway to buy ten crores of Covid-19 vaccine from the GAVI vaccine alliance.
