US-returnee woman, son found corona positive in Gaibandha

An expatriate woman and her son have been tested positive with the novel coronavirus in Gainbandha's Sadullahpur upazila.

They returned to the country from America on March 9 and attended a marriage ceremony the following day in Laxmipur and Habibullahpur. Afterwards they caught cold, cough and fever. One of their relatives also fell sick.

Later Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) collected samples of three patients on March 20.

IEDCR authorities on March 22 informed that the expatriate woman and her 10-year-old son tested positive with the coronavirus, which is believed to have started from China's Wuhan fish market last year.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Gaibandha Civil Surgeon Dr ABM Abu Hanif said, "The patients have been kept under strict observation. We are trying to trace the persons, who came into contact with the woman and her son. The contacts will be home quarantined."

Earlier on Sunday, Sadullapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nabinewaz issued an order to lockdown the upazila to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the area.

Hours after UNO's order, district's deputy commissioner has termed the announcement a mistake.
