Woman who claimed to have sold hair for food now says she did it one month ago

The Savar woman who claimed yesterday that she had sold her hair to buy food, milk for baby amid coronavirus lockdown today told the administration that she had cut her hair a month ago.

The woman Shathi Begum's claim yesterday became news in most of the mainstream news platforms of the country, including The Business Standard.

She told the media that due to lockdowns for coronavirus she and her husband lost jobs. As she had a baby, she had to sell her hair to buy food. She said that she sold her hair yesterday.

As the news drew attention of the district administration, officials met her to inquire about what happened. In that situation, Shathi Begum said that she had cut and sold her hair about one month ago to buy food.

She told TBS that she did it so that she can get food relief.

Additional District Commissioner (revenue) Mahmudul Haque told The Business Standard that the incident was about 45 days old. "But she hid this information. We will inform the higher authorities accordingly," he said.

After visiting her house, the ADC found the woman had got enough relief for next one month.

Savar municipality Mayor Hazi Abdul Gani said, "To tarnish the image of the government, a group of conspirators have used this woman to lie to the media. The local administration has been asked to investigate the matter."

Assistant Commissioner (Land) Abdullah Al Mahfuz said he rushed to the house of the woman on Tuesday night, and gave her relief.

On spot visit, our stringer found, a local businessman gave her 50kg rice, 5 litres of oil and some money yesterday.
