A woman was gang-raped allegedly by Chhatra League men at a hostel of the Murari Chand (MC) College in Sylhet on Friday night.

A group of six or seven culprits dragged the woman into the dormitory and raped her after beating and tying up her husband when the couple went to visit the college at Tilagarh area in the evening, police said.

Being informed, police rescued the couple from the dormitory area around 10:30 pm and admitted the victim to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital.

The victim's husband, on Saturday, filed a case at the Shah Paran Police station accusing nine people, including six Chhatra League men. But none has yet been arrested in the case, said Abdul Kayum Chowdhury, OC of Shah Paran Police Station.

The accused include MC College BCL leaders Shah Md Mahbubur Rahman Rony, 25 and M Saifur Rahman, 28, BCL leaders Tarek, 28, Arjun Laskar, 25, Robiul Islam, 25 and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, 25, from outside the college

After the incident, police raided the dormitory and seized some local and foreign-made arms, said OC Kayum.

Later, police filed a case accusing MC College BCL leader M Saifur Rahman under arms act over the firearms confiscation from the hostel.

Anger sparked in Sylhet following Friday night's heinous incident inside the hundred-years-old college premises. Some students on Saturday gathered in front of the MC College and in Chouhatta area of the city to protest the gang rape.

Besides, an organisation named 'Sangkubddho Nagorik Andolon' staged a protest programme in front of the central Shaheed Minar in the afternoon.

Being informed, Awami League leaders of Tilagarh area tried to cover up the matter. Later, when the police went to the spot, an attempt was made to reach a compromise. However, the accused fled the spot after wasting time in the name of a compromise.

Regarding the incident of rape, MC College Principal Saleh Ahmed said the students involved in the incident will be rusticated from the college.

The college administration, on Saturday, announced the closure of the dormitory after the rape incident and asked the students to leave the hostel by noon. The students then left the dormitory.
