WaterAid, Railway sign deal on public toilet construction
The toilets outside the railways stations will cater the needs of women, men, children and differently-abled people
WaterAid Bangladesh and Bangladesh Railway Thursday signed a deal under which the state-owned rail transport agency will get WaterAid's technical support to improve water, sanitation and hygiene services for the passengers.
WaterAid will build public toilets at rail stations and develop the management of public sanitation facilities to ensure improved services for passengers and general people, said a WaterAid press release Thursday.
According to the agreement, three public toilets including one in Dhaka's airport railway station will be built by WaterAid. The non-governmental organisation will gradually spread the learning on public sanitation management among railway staffers across the country.
Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan was present at the agreement signing at the Railway Bhaban in the capital. Hasin Jahan, country director of WaterAid Bangladesh; Dhirendra Nath Mazumder, director general of Bangladesh Railway; Md Salim Reza, secretary to railways ministry; and Santanu Lahiri, senior decentralisation WASH specialist were also present among others.
According to the press statement, the public toilets outside the railways stations will cater the needs of women, men, children and differently-abled people.
The toilets will have separate male and female chambers with female attendants for female chamber, lockers, hand washing points, showers, drinking water facility alongside round the clock electricity support and security.
WaterAid has already constructed 42 public toilets in Dhaka and other areas of the country to ensure improved sanitation services for people.
