Viral 5 Aug Ashulia video: Committee formed to investigate incident
No deadline given for the report’s submission
A four-member committee has been formed to investigate a viral video showing police officers dumping a body of a gunshot victim onto a rickshaw van piled with more bodies.
An additional superintendent of police (ASP) from the District Special Branch (DSB) has been appointed as the head of the committee, Dhaka District Superintendent of Police (SP) Ahmad Muyeed told the media today.
Police on Saturday confirmed that the incident happened near Ashulia Police Station on 5 August, shortly after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country.
Police are handling the matter with utmost seriousness, Ahmad Muyeed said after inspecting the police station. "The committee is working diligently on the investigation."
However, the officer said no specific deadline has been given for the submission of the investigation report.
"There are specific directives from the chief adviser to deal with crimes against humanity with utmost importance," he said, adding that there will be cases against everyone involved in the crime.
He further said they have identified the people seen present and involved in the incident, but are not disclosing names to allow for further steps.
On Thursday night, a 1-minute and 14-second video went viral on social media, showing two police officers—one holding the hands and the other the feet—tossing a body onto a rickshaw van already stacked with bodies.
Subsequent analysis of the video and a poster visible in it confirmed the location and date of the incident.
