Chinese businessman was killed by security guards during robbery: DB

The Chinese businessman Gao Jianhui was killed during a robbery at his flat, said the Detective Branch (DB) of police today.

The robbery was carried out in a planned manner by two security guards of the building in which he resided, the DB said at a press conference at the DB media centre.

A special team of the DB (East) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Tuesday conducted a raid and arrested two people in connection with the murder of Gao, said Abdul Baten, additional commissioner, detective branch of Dhaka Metroplitan Police.

The duo was identified as Abdur Rauf, 27 and Enamul Haque, 27, security guards of the building in the capital's Banani.

On December 11, police recovered the body of Gao Jianhui, 47, from Banani area. Gao's body was found buried at the backyard outside his home.

Gao used to supply stones and other construction materials to the Padma Bridge and Payra Port projects. He had been living in the flat for one year.

Law enforcers recovered a broken mobile set, a towel and water bucket used during the killing and other materials used in burying the body, alongside Tk1.21 lakh cash in their possession, said Abdul Baten.

He said Rouf and Enamul confessed to the crime during questioning.

They planned the murder together and executed it, he added.

How the murder was planned

Rouf joined as a security guard of the building one month back while Enamul joined 15 days ago. Both of them lived together at the rooftop of the building. That is how they fast became friends.

They became envious of the luxurious lifestyles of the rich residents of the building. At one point, they came to know that Chinese national Gao was very rich and lives in alone in his apartment; and kept money in his room. They then made the plan to kill Gao and steal his money.

How they executed the murder

On December 6, they tried to kill Gao but was not successful. They pressed the calling bell of the flat but returned in fear as no one responded.

On December 10, they went again and pressed the calling bell of Gao's flat around 5 or 6pm. When Gao opened the door, he looked at them with astonishment. Gao gestured to the duo with his hands to ask what the matter was as he did not know Bangla or English language. Enamul responded that they wanted to drink water.

Enamul wrapped the towel around Gao's neck and Rouf grabbed him by the waist on entering the apartment. After killing him they took Tk3.49 lakh and his mobile phone.  They went back to their place after that.

Around 11pm at night Rouf dug a pit in the backyard of the building as he was on duty that night.

Later he buried Gao's body with the help of another guard.
