Bengali New Year "Pahela Baishakh- 1428' has been celebrated at Dhaka University through a limited symbolic programme considering the worsening situation and lockdown of Covid-19.

On this occasion, a short symbolic Mangal Shobhajatra was organised on the Arts faculty premises with various masks and symbols made by the artists of the faculty following the hygiene rules and maintaining social distancing, said a press release.

State Minister for Culture KM Khalid and Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman led the symbolic Mangal Shobhajatra.

On this occasion, wishing all the teachers, students, officials and employees of the university a happy Bengali New Year, the VC said that the colorful festival and tradition of welcoming the Bengali New Year is non-communal, liberal and humane which is happening for years after years.

The Bengali new year-1428 is an important year in many respects as this time Bengali New Year came at the juncture of the centenary of Dhaka University, the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of independence.

Besides, State Minister for Culture KM Khalid said the Mangal Shobhajatra is part of the world heritage.

But in the current pandemic situation, it is not possible to celebrate the Pahela Baishakh in a festive atmosphere this year. "We hope that in the future; will be able to celebrate the Bengali New Year as before."

He thanked the university authorities and the Faculty of Fine Arts for organising this symbolic programme.
