A suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported ‘gunfight’ in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as MD Hossain, 29, son of late Anu Miah of West Sat Gharia Para area under Hoaikong union in the upazila.
Teknaf Model police station officer-in-charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das confirmed the incident.
“On information, police conducted an anti-narcotics drive at the spot. Sensing the presence of police drug peddlers started to fire on them, forcing them to fire back, which triggered a gunfight,” said Pradip Kumar.
“Hossain was shot at the spot. He was taken to the Teknaf Hospital where doctor declared him dead,” he said.
“Two locally-made weapons, three rounds of fresh cartridge and 5,000 yaba pills have been recovered from the spot,” he added.
Three police officials were also injured during the drive.
