The Election Commission has cancelled the mayoral polls for Gazipur's Sreepur Municipality following the death of a candidate from coronavirus on Wednesday.

Shahidullah Shahid, 49, was contesting under the BNP ticket in the mayoral polls scheduled for 28 December.

Md Istafizul Haque, returning officer of the election and also district election officer, issued a public notice, announcing the decision.

However, elections to other posts of the municipality will be held as scheduled.

Qazi Saiyedul Islam Babul, general secretary of Gazipur district unit BNP, said Shahid had been suffering from lung complexities.

He recently tested positive for coronavirus and had been undergoing treatment at Hi-Care General Hospital in Uttara.

He was later transferred to Square Hospital where he died at around 11am on Wednesday.
