Shalla’s Jhumon involved with BNP, says Sunamganj SP
Charge sheet of the case to be submitted in the shortest possible time, he says
Sunamganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Mizanur Rahman on Sunday said Jhumon Das, whose Facebook post resulted in attacks on minorities in Noagaon of Shalla upazila, is associated with the BNP.
He also noted that the charge sheet of the case would be filed in the shortest possible time, reports Prothom Alo.
SP Md Mizanur Rahman said this at a press conference of Sunamganj district police at the conference room of the police super's office. He highlighted the overall situation in Shalla.
In the written statement, Mizanur Rahman said that Jhumon Das of Noagaon village is associated with BNP and is the former joint general secretary of Shalla Upazila Chhatra Dal.
After his arrest, Jhumon was sent to jail on 17 March under Section 54.
"Police are investigating the incident keeping various issues in mind. However, since the beginning of the incident centred on the Facebook status against Hefazat leader Mamunul Haque, the investigation started from there. There may be other issues involved," said SP Mizanur.
He further said everyone involved in the attack would be brought under the law and no innocent person would be arrested or harassed.
A temporary police camp has been set up at the village school after the incident. "It will remain there as long as needed," he added.
Sunamganj Additional Superintendent of Police Saheb Ali Pathan, Sadar Model Police Station acting Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shahidur Rahman, acting officer of the special branch of police Anwar Hossain, and others were present at the conference.
On 17 March, nearly 100 houses of the Hindu community in Noagaon village of Shalla were attacked after one of the residents reportedly posted against Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque on Facebook.
The incident caused a stir across the country. Local Union Parishad Chairman Bakul Majumder and police filed two separate cases with Shalla Police Station.
Thirty people were arrested in the next two days after the attack.
Later on 19 March, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Shahidul Islam, the mastermind of the attack.
