Off-season rain chokes Dhaka streets
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded 23mm of rainfall in Dhaka city on Wednesday
A moderate rain accompanied by thunderbolts on Wednesday afternoon inundated many parts of the major traffic arteries in Dhaka city, causing traffic congestions till night.
Traffic movements on the Mirpur Road from the Dhaka City College point, Green Road, Elenbari, Mohakhali, Moghbazar Road, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Gulshan, Nikunja, Kalyanpur, and some other places were partially halted and remained very slow due to waterlogging.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said it recorded 23 milimetres of monsoon rainfall in Dhaka city on the day. Jashore, Kushtia, and Satkhira also witnessed rainfall.
Akram Hossain, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Assistant Commissioner for Dhanmondi Traffic Zone, told The Business Standard that the sudden heavy rain inundated the busy roads in Dhanmondi area.
"The waterlogging caused by the rainfall also led to a long tailback in Dhanmondi 27 road and surrounding areas, as vehicles were unable to move at their usual pace on the road," he added.
According to the Met Office's 24-hour forecast, commencing from Wednesday at 6pm, rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at one or two places in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions.
