Satkhira College girl takes own life over harassment on Facebook
A college girl committed suicide in Satkhira Sadar Upazila on Monday morning, after unidentified individuals hacked into her personal Facebook account and posted derogatory content.
The tragic incident took place just five days before her wedding.
The deceased was identified as Nandita Chowdhury, 20, daughter of Bikash Chowdhury of Munjitpur village, and a student of Satkhira Government Mahila College.
She was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom in the morning. When notified, police visited the scene and recovered the body, said family members.
Nandita's personal Facebook account was hacked a few days ago, after which the hackers proceeded to share indecent and derogatory posts from the account.
Unnerved by the incident, Nandita appeared at Satkhira Sadar Police Station on Sunday noon and filed a General Diary, seeking help from law enforcement.
When Nandita returned home from the police station, four individuals – two boys and two girls – confronted her and accused her of sharing the disturbing content on Facebook herself.
At one stage, they threatened her, saying "If you don't admit your guilt, action will be taken against you."
Since Nandita refused to comply with their demands, the four continued to argue before leaving the scene.
However, Nandita was devastated by the episode and committed suicide the next night.
Bikash Chowdhury, father of the deceased, said all arrangements had already been made for her wedding ceremony.
Sub-Inspector, Osman Gani, of Sadar Police Station said Nandita had filed the General Diary on 8 November, seeking help from police to handle the situation.
"Unfortunately, she committed suicide while the allegation was being investigated," he added.
