The government plans to buy furniture worth around Tk56 crore for the accommodation of Russian engineers who will work on the construction of the Rooppur nuclear power plant.
An additional Tk28 crore worth of home appliances will also be bought for their use.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, on Wednesday approved the procurement proposal.
The contract was awarded to Hatil Complex Limited to supply furniture at 956 units at four 20-storey and six 16-storey buildings at Green City Residential Palli under Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Construction Project with around TK55.60 crore.
The finance minister told reporters that the construction of the Rooppur nuclear power plant was being delayed due to the Russians.
"Bangladesh will make necessary arrangements for their stay in the project area as per the agreement signed for the construction of the plant which is why the required furniture and material have to arranged," said the minister.
The Finance Minister further said buildings have already been built to house the Russians, now they have to buy furniture and home appliances.
"For this, the procurement of the furniture and home appliances at a cost of Tk 55.60 crore and Tk 26.97 crore have been approved," he added.
