Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity has urged transport owners to pay the workers of road and naval sectors their wages and Eid bonus by 15 Ramadan.

The association also urged the government to announce a wage board for transport workers to ensure their wages and other facilities.

In a press statement issued on the occasion of May Day on Friday, it pointed out that public transport owners lease their buses, human haulers, tempos, and auto rickshaws to drivers on daily payment in absence of a structural wage scheme.

A driver has to pay the owner the daily rent for the vehicle alongside meeting fuel costs, paying his helper, meeting other expenditures, and earning for himself. Therefore, drivers engage in unhealthy competition with each other on the road to earn more to meet all the expenses and make some profit.

All these lead to a chaos in the transport sector, said the association.

The association also called upon the government to stand by transport workers amid the ongoing crisis caused by nationwide shutdown. It also made an appeal before the government to take steps to ensure transport workers' rights upholding the lessons of the glorious May Day.
