Rizvi questions how Saber Chowdhury secured bail in 24 hours
Speaking at a rally in Khilgaon today (10 October), organised by families of enforced disappearance victims, Rizvi said, "Saber Hossain Chowdhury is responsible for 11 cases of enforced disappearances and murders. How could someone like him secure bail within 24 hours?"
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has raised concerns over how Awami League leader Saber Hossain Chowdhury was granted bail within 24 hours, despite serious allegations against him.
Speaking at a rally in Khilgaon today (10 October), organised by families of enforced disappearance victims, Rizvi said, "Saber Hossain Chowdhury is responsible for 11 cases of enforced disappearances and murders. How could someone like him secure bail within 24 hours?"
Rizvi claimed that under Chowdhury's directive, several murders and enforced disappearances took place in the area. He specifically mentioned the case of a young man named Joni, who was allegedly abducted and killed after being shot 16 times.
"The tears of the fathers who lost their sons haven't dried yet," Rizvi said, adding that Saber Hossain Chowdhury had been complicit in Sheikh Hasina's violent actions and that his long tenure as an MP, despite no elections, was a product of the ruling party's oppression.
Rizvi further questioned the interim government, led by Prof Muhammad Yunus, for allowing such impunity.
"This interim government, which is backed by the people, has individuals like Asif Nazrul as the law adviser. How does a man like Saber Hossain Chowdhury get released on bail within 24 hours while they are in power? Who is this government protecting?" he asked.
On Monday (7 October), Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman placed him on remand in a murder case regarding the death of Mokbul, who succumbed to a bullet injury in 2022 at the BNP party office.
On the same day, Saber, who was elected the 28th president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), an international organisation of national parliaments, in 2014, was also shown arrested in four other cases.
Saber was granted bail on the same day, in two murder cases and two attempted murder cases at the Khilgaon police station, as well as one more attempted murder case at the Paltan police station.
Around 6:30 in the evening of 7 October, Saber, who held two deputy ministerial posts in succession between 1999 and 2001, was released from court custody.
Following the speech, BNP activists led by Rizvi held a protest, demanding the arrest of Saber Hossain Chowdhury.
