Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton on Wednesday freed seven black kites and 20 black-crowned night herons from Shahid AHM Kamaruzzaman Botanical Garden and Zoo.

The mayor said, "Many birds have almost gone extinct in Bangladesh. These birds have been freed to maintain the ecological balance and for them to fly in the open sky. The cage doors of various species of pigeons will also be kept open."

Rajshahi City Corporation veterinary surgeon Dr Forhad Uddin said, "Many wild animals and birds are going extinct due to scarcity of shelter, food, illegal hunting, trafficking, natural calamities, etc. The biodiversity is at risk."

He added that the zoo has bred black-crowned night herons and the mayor freed some of them on Wednesday. Gradually, 200 more birds will be freed.

Among others, Rajshahi City Corporation Executive Magistrate Samar Kumar Paul, Acting Officer of Shahid AHM Kamaruzzaman Botanical Garden and Zoo Mahbubur Rahman and other officials, were also present at the event.
