Protest in Ctg demands justice for july massacre, end to student arrests
Speakers at a human chain protest organised by the Students Alliance for Democracy (SAD) have criticised the government for its failure to address key issues following the fall of the dictatorial regime on 5 August.
The demonstration, held at Sholashar railway station on Sunday evening, highlighted the lack of justice for the July massacre and the ongoing arrests of students involved in the anti-fascist struggle.
"Some will sit in the government, while others will go to jail. This duplicity is not acceptable," declared the speakers, condemning what they described as a betrayal of the revolution. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of cases against student activists and proper rehabilitation for injured victims and the families of martyrs, who, they claimed, have been neglected, according to a press release.
The interim government, formed after the fall of the dictator, was tasked with addressing these critical issues. However, the speakers lamented that the trial of the July massacre has yet to commence. They also noted that those injured during the uprising are not receiving adequate medical care, and the families of the martyrs have been abandoned by the authorities.
Meanwhile, collaborators of the former fascist regime remain in influential positions, and individuals responsible for mass killings walk free.
The speakers further criticised the police for filing cases against students who resisted police forces during the uprising.
They asserted that the students' actions were not crimes but acts of justified resistance aimed at liberating the country from oppression. Instead of being honoured for their sacrifices, these students are being targeted, arrested, and prosecuted by the very system they fought to dismantle.
"There is no justice in arresting those who risked their lives to bring down the regime," the speakers added. "It is deeply unfair that while some coup participants now enjoy positions in the government, others are being thrown in jail. This kind of duplicity is unacceptable."
The protesters demanded an immediate end to the arrests and the withdrawal of all cases against student activists. They also urged the government to fulfil its promises by ensuring proper medical treatment for the injured and providing support to the families of the martyrs.
The protest at Sholashar is part of a broader wave of unrest, as students and activists across the country continue to push for accountability, justice, and the fulfilment of the interim government's responsibilities.
