Abdul Quader Mirza, the mayor of Basurhat Municipality in Noakhali's Companyganj, has been sued Thursday night, over the death of auto-rickshaw driver Alauddin in a factional clash of Awami League on the previous day.
Emdad Hossain, younger brother of the deceased, filed the case with Companyganj Police Station around 9 pm, accusing Abdul Quader Mirza, his younger brother Shahadat Hossain, his son Mirza Masrur Qader and 161 other named, unnamed persons.
According to the case statement, the accused persons, under the leadership of Quader Mirza, created panic among the locals by detonating cocktails in Basurhat on Wednesday afternoon when a faction of Awami League was holding a protest programme there.
They also carried out an attack with pistols, short guns, and other locally made weapons on the protest programme.
At one stage of the attack, Alauddin sustained critical injuries after being shot in torso by number-4 accused Najim Uddin Badal. Later, some other accused fired on him randomly and pierced an iron rod into his belly before leaving the spot.
He was rescued and rushed to Companyganj Upazila Health Complex. After providing with first aid, he was later taken to Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 11pm.
Soon after the case was filed, members of Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have reportedly cordoned off the Basurhat Municipality building with Quader Mirza staying inside.
