The High Court has granted anticipatory bail to 120 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in connection with the arson attacks on buses in different parts of the capital on the day of the Dhaka-18 by-election.
The High Court (HC) bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan granted the bails on Wednesday.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, lawyer for the BNP leaders, told reporters that 120 BNP leaders and activists, including BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy; Juba Dal President, Saiful Alam Nirab; General Secretary, Sultan Salauddin Tuku; BNP candidate for Dhaka -18 by election, SM Jahangir Hossain; former Dhaka South mayoral candidate, Ishraq Hossain, among others, have been granted anticipatory bail by the HC until 5 January.
However, they will have to surrender to the lower court.
The by-election for Dhaka-18 constituency was held on 12 November. 11 buses were torched in different parts of the capital between noon and 8:30 pm that day.
13 cases have been filed in nine police stations in the capital, in which some 700 BNP leaders and activists at different levels have been accused.
