BNP to join Chattogram city elections
The Election Commission will on February 16 announce the schedule for the Chittagong city elections
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will participate in the upcoming elections to the Chattogram City Corporation.
"BNP policymakers have decided to take part in the local government elections," BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a meeting in the port city on Tuesday afternoon.
"Joining the city elections is also part of our protests," he said. "The BNP had earlier boycotted some elections which was bad decisions. Now we are taking part in elections. We are trying to unite people through elections."
Speaking at the party's Chittagong city office, Mirza Fakhrul said, "The BNP is a liberal political party. We believe that the power can change through elections. There is no other way to change the power. So we will participate in elections."
The Election Commission will on February 16 announce the schedule for the Chittagong city elections.
Several members of the BNP, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and other front organisations of the party attended the meeting.
Before the meeting, they gathered at Nasim Bhawan, BNP's Chattogram city office, in processions from different parts of the city.
