Police arrest youth for torturing wife in Cumilla
Police have arrested a youth - Nazmul Hasan, 25 – from Cumilla's Lalmai upazila, for allegedly torturing his wife in demand of dowry.
The incident came to light when a video clip of the incident went viral on social media platforms and drew a huge outcry.
According to locals, Maryam Akter Irene, 19, got married to Nazmul Hossain of Bara Chalund village in Lalmai Upazila a couple of years ago.
Shortly after the marriage, her husband and other in-laws started pressuring for a dowry of Tk3 lakh. Later, they kicked out Irene who was forced to live with his parents.
On 7 April when she went to her father-in-law's house to meet her husband at around 9 am, Irene was again physically abused by her in-laws for demanding dowry.
A 17-second video of the torture later went viral on social media.
Noticing the clip, Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ayub reached out to the victim and learned about the whole matter.
Irene also had lodged a case with Lalmai Police Station accusing her husband and in-laws.
Later, police arrested the accused from his village on Tuesday night.
Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ayub told The Business Standard, "We identified the abused woman by looking at the incident of torture on social media and later recorded a case under the Women and Child Abuse Suppression Act based on her written complaint."
He confirmed that Nazmul was arrested after police had verified the allegations.
