PBI report reveals sisters committed suicide due to love triangle

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has unveiled the mystery behind the double suicide of two cousin sisters' in Rangpur's Sheikhpara as a sequel of discontent over the issue of love triangle.

The main accused in the case who incited the suicides causing a "love triangle," has given a confessional statement at Chief Judicial Magistrate Amli Court-2.

PBI said in a press release on Saturday morning that it had launched an investigation into the double suicide of two cousins in a case filed under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act at the Rangpur Metropolitan Tajhat Police Station.

Sadia Akhter Anni, 15, hailing from Sheikhpara of Rangpur and Lutfan Nahar Latul, 14, daughter of Monzur Hossain, committed suicide by poisoning on 12 February, 2018. The incident was widely reported in the media. Police quickly started investigating it.

A murder case was filed with Rangpur Kotwali police station in this regard. The case was later handed over to the PBI after two and a half years as the police failed to crack the case.

Rangpur PBI Superintendent of Police ABM Zakir Hossain handed over the case to PBI Inspector Jatindranath Sharma to investigate the case. The investigating officer worked on the case for more than a year. Then he arrested Merajul Islam, 22, as the main accused in inciting suicide using information technology.

The accused was produced before the court last Thursday. Chief Judicial Magistrate Amli Court Judge Delwar Hossain recorded his confessional statement. According to the PBI, Merajul confessed to having affairs with both cousins at the same time. He also confessed to forcing them into having sexual activities with him. After the affairs came to light, in shame, the sisters went to their grandfather's house and chose the path of suicide by poisoning.

Rangpur PBI Police Super ABM Zakir Hossain said, "The real mystery came out after a long year of proper investigation into the suicides. The investigation report will be submitted to the court soon."

The forensic department of Rangpur Medical College Hospital reported that the girls were raped before they died. Police said the investigation into the case is ongoing.
