Veteran singer Mrinal Bhattacharya passes away
He tested negative for the novel coronavirus while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Ma-o-Shishu Hospital
Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra musician Mrinal Bhattacharya has passed away at the age of 78.
The artist died at Chattogram Ma-o-Shishu Hospital at 3am on Wednesday, said the hospital's Director (Admin) Dr Nurul Haque.
He left behind his wife, son, and relatives – as well as a host of well-wishers – to mourn his death.
Mrinal was suffering from various old-age complications including cardiac issues and diabetes. He was admitted to the hospital on June 18. Mrinal was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) later as his health condition deteriorated.
The death of Mrinal Bhattacharya has cast a shadow of mourning over the cultural arena in the port city.
Various cultural organisations, including Chittagong Shilpakala Academy and Udichi Shilpigoshthi, have mourned the death of the veteran musician.
Mrinal joined the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra as an artist during the Liberation War in 1971.
He was involved in various cultural organisations including Arya Sangeet Vidyapeeth and Nazrul Shilpi Gosthi. He was also a music director.
Mrinal Bhattacharya's funeral was held at his ancestral village at Sitakunda upazlia's Mahadevpur area on Wednesday afternoon. Earlier at noon, he was accorded state honors at JMS Sen Hall in the city.
The cultural personality was tested for Covid-19 and his test results returned negative while he was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
