Noakhali UP member held for helping Rohingyas obtain passports
Police have arrested a member of Kadra Union Parishad of Noakhali's Senbag Upazila on Tuesday, for allegedly helping three Rohingyas obtain Bangladeshi passports.
He was identified as Abdul Hakim, member-elect from Ward-3 of the union.
Abdul Baten Mridha, officer-in-charge of Senbag Police Station, said they conducted a drive in Senbag municipality area in early hours of Tuesday and arrested the UP member.
Abdul Hakim allegedly assisted three Rohingya men, who fled Rohingya camps of Ukhiya, to obtain birth and citizenship certificates from Kadra Union Parishad.
Using the documents, the three collected passports from the regional passport office of Noakhali on 24 December, 2018.
Later, a team of Akbar Shah Police Station detained the Rohingya men for possessing Bangladeshi passports.
In this regard, a sub-inspector - Ashadul Islam – filed a case with the police station on 5 September, 2019.
In the case, a court has recently issued arrest warrant against the UP member.
The OC also revealed that the arrestee was sent to prison through the trial court on Tuesday afternoon.
