A woman and her son lost their lives as two buses collided during an undue competition for passengers on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Narayanganj's Araihazar on Tuesday night.

The mother Monsura Aktar, 24, wife of Jahangir hailing from Golakandail of Rupganj upazila and son Asif, 4, were getting down from a bus at the time of the accident.

Kanchpur Highway Police Station officer in charge, Mozaffar Hossain confirmed the deaths and said, "Two buses were competing against each other and had a collision. The mother and son were caught in the clash and died as they fell under the bus."

According to witnesses and police, a Dhaka-bound bus from Narshindi had a collision with a Sylhet-bound bus on last night. The woman and son were standing by the bus door as they were about to get off from the Dhaka bound bus.

The duo fell down from the bus when the Sylhet-bound bus hit the Dhaka-bound bus and the back wheels of the bus carrying them ran over them.

Local people took them to the local hospital where the doctors declared them dead.

Both the buses fled the scene immediately after the incident.

"The bodies have been sent to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue. A case has been filed in this connection," the OC added.
