A mother fishing cat has lost its life under wheels of a speeding vehicle while apparently trying to save its 3 cubs from being hit by the vehicle.

The incident took place at Ishapur of Sreemangal upazila in Moulvibazar district on Sunday night.

Motaleb Hossain, forest range officer of Sreemangal, said the nature of the accident implied that the fishing cat lost its life while trying to save the cubs.

"The mother cat was hit by the vehicle while crossing the road with her cubs. Two cubs were found on one side of the road and the other cub was found its opposite side," he said.

The forest official assumed that the fishing cat was crushed under the vehicle while trying to fetch the lone cub or save it.

Two of the cubs, aged around 25-day, were rescued from the spot later on the night while the other one on the next night.

The cubs are now kept at a rescue center and will be later released Lawachara National Park.

Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department) Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said vehicles run very fast on this road.

"We should limit the speed of our vehicles around the forest area," he added.
