10 Bangladeshis injured in suspected migrant smugglers chase in Greece
The Bangladeshis remained hospitalised with light injuries
A car carrying 12 including 10 Bangladeshi migrants who had crossed into Greece from neighbouring Turkey crashed into a vehicle following a high-speed chase by Greece police across the northern part of the country on Friday.
All the passengers including the driver of the other car were injured, police said, reported The Star.
Ten Bangladeshis and two Syrians were transported to hospital, as was the Greek driver.
The Syrians were released from the hospital after treatment and were arrested on suspicion of migrant smuggling.
The Greek driver was also released, while the 10 Bangladeshi men remained hospitalised with light injuries, police said.
The car failed to stop for a check on the main highway near the northern town of Kavala just after midnight.
The ensuing police chase ended in the city of Thessaloniki about 150 kilometres away, when the vehicle ran a series of red lights and crashed into a passing car.
Thousands of people continue to enter Greece from Turkey, either from the coast to nearby Greek islands or through the land border in far northeastern Greece, despite European efforts to stop migrant flows.
