A Chittagong court has remanded Shahjahan, the primary suspect in the murder case of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of former police superintendent Babul Akter, for two days.
Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Shafiuddin issued the order on Sunday and also allowed two other suspects in the case - Motaleb Mia Prakash Wasim and Anwar Hossain - to be interrogated at the jail gate.
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Additional Superintendent and Mitu murder case investigation officer (IO) Md Moin Uddin applied for five days remand of the accused.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) of CMP NM Nasir Uddin confirmed the information to The Business Standard.
Mitu was shot and stabbed on the way to pick up her son from a school bus on OR Nizam Road in Chittagong on June 5, 2016. Babul Akhter later filed a murder case at the Panchlaish police station.
Police arrested Anwar and Wasim along with Abu Nasur Gunnu, Shah Zaman alias Robin, Saidul Alam Sikder alias Sakku and Shahjahan.
Police also arrested alleged firearms supplier Ehteshamul Haque Bhola and his associate MD Monir.
On the night of June 24, 2016, Babul Akhter was interrogated for about 14 hours at the Dhaka Detective Police Office. On September 7 the same year, the Home Ministry fired Bakul Akter.
The detective police had been investigating the case from the beginning. However, after nearly three years of investigation with no result, the court ordered the PBI to investigate the case in January.
