State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the Buriganga launch capsize incident was actually murder. Thirty two passengers died in the launch that capsized after it was hit by another larger vessel.
"Looking at the CCTV footage, it looks like it was not an accident, it was murder," he said. "In this case, the investigation will check to see if the launch owners were negligent."
The state minister said this while inspecting the site of the passenger launch accident and rescue operations at Sadarghat in Dhaka on Monday.
The families of each of the victims killed in the launch accident will be given Tk1.5 lakh from the maritime disaster fund of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said the state minister.
BIWTA gave Tk10,000 and the Dhaka District Administration gave Tk20,000 immediately for the burial of the victims.
So far 32 bodies have been recovered after a launch, carrying more than 50 passengers, capsized in the Buriganga river after being hit by another larger vessel in Dhaka's Shyambazar area today.
