The shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) in Sylhet will remain closed for two days – Thursday and Friday – this week to avoid Shab-e-Barat gatherings in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.
No one will be allowed to enter the shrine area or offer prayer there. People will also not be allowed to offer prayers outside the shrine mosque, the shrine's caretaker (Khadem) Samun Mahmud Khan told The Business Standard.
Samun Mahmud said they have hung banners at the shrine's gates announcing the closure. People will not be allowed to offer Jumma prayers at the mosque there, he added.
Thousands of people throng the shrine on Shab-e-Barat night every year.
Meanwhile, the district administration has also imposed a ban on movements of all kinds of vehicles, except ambulances.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Kazi M Emdadul Islam issued the order and people were informed about the ban over megaphones in the city.
