Ex-MPs Ekramul Chowdhury, Abdur Rouf arrested
RAB also arrested Abdur Rouf, former MP from Kushtia-4 constituency, from the capital city's Mirpur area early today
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested former member of parliament for Noakhali-4 Ekramul Chowdhury and former MP from Kushtia-4 constituency Abdur Rouf.
He was arrested from the Abdul Malek Lane area of Khulshi in Chattogram city, Chattogram RAB-7 said in a press statement issued tonight (2 October).
Chattogram RAB-7 second-in-command Major Md Sanria Chowdhury confirmed the matter.
RAB also arrested Abdur Rouf from the capital city's Mirpur area early today, said sources at RAB media and legal wing, BSS reports.
He was arrested in connection with cases filed over attacks on students and the public during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests.
The Business Standard could not immediately confirm in which case Ekramul was arrested.
However, a Samakal report, citing RAB-7 Captain Lt Colonel Mahbub Al Alam, stated that the influential former lawmaker is an accused in at least five cases filed on various charges of sabotage, murder, and arms. "He has been arrested in the cases."
Both former lawmakers will be produced before courts today.
A senior Awami League leader, Ekramul was the MP for Noakhali-4 constituency, covering Sadar and Subarnachar upazilas, since 2008.
He also served as the general secretary of Noakhali Awami League for 17 years.
