Former national footballer and organiser SM Salahuddin Mandal died from cardiac arrest at home early Sunday.
He played for Mohammedan, Wanderers and Farashganj Football Club.
He was a former president of the District Football Association and president of Sonali Atit Club and Narayanganj Thana Juba League.
His namaz-e-janaza was held at the Tajik Pradhan Jame Mosque after the Zuhr prayers on the day. He will later be buried at Syedpur graveyard.
He was one of the leading footballers in the country and was in form between 1985-86, said Shahid Hossain Swapan, another footballer.
"Though he retired from football, he loved the game from heart. And he did many activities for the betterment of football in Narayanganj," Swapan added.
Terming Salauddin as a gentle man, Kabir Hossain, councillor of Ward 18 in Narayanganj, said that he used to think about the people of his locality.
"He came forward to support people of his area during the lockdown. And he got fame by appearing on the advertisement of Lifebuoy soap. Many of the local players have played in the national team with his support," Kabir Hossain added.
Salauddin was fond of football, said his elder brother Moslem Uddin.
"He used to practice football all the time, and even he missed school classes to play football. Gradually, he turned into a football player," added Moslem.
