Flood water, power cut disrupt services at Osmani Medical
Medical services at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet have been disrupted due to power cut after flood water entered the hospital premises.
Services at the hospital's surgery department and intensive care unit (ICU) are being hampered because of the power outage.
Prof Ahmedul Kabir, additional director general of the Department of Health, told The Business Standard that there is no electricity at Osmani Medical College Hospital, yet the ICU is being operated manually.
"The process of installing a generator on an emergency basis is going on to continue providing medical services to patients. We are in touch with the city mayor about this. Hopefully, an arrangement can be made very soon," he added.
Hospital authorities were forced to cut off the power supply as water started entering the hospital premises around 12 noon Saturday.
Meanwhile, Osmani Medical College has been declared closed due to the deteriorating flood situation.
Osmani Medical College Principal Moinul Haque told TBS that classes and examinations have been postponed due to flooding in different halls of the medical college.
Shams Bin Rakib, a fifth-year student of the college, said, "Water entered the hall premises, there is no electricity either. The hall has been declared closed today. We are leaving the hall and going home. Medical services are also being disrupted in the hospital due to flood water."
A medical officer of Sylhet Sadar Hospital, who did not want to be named, said the hospital has 66 patients. Even after recovering, they could not get out of the hospital as roads were inundated.
He also said that no new patients could reach the hospital due to the same cause.
The hospital also faced power outages and is continuing treatment using generators, he added.
