Ex-BAB chairman Nazrul Islam placed on 7-day remand

A Dhaka court today (2 October) placed former Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder on a seven-day remand in connection with the killing of a youth named Emon during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 5 August.
Nazrul, also the former chairman of Exim Bank limited, was produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Anisur Rahman with a prayer for granting him 10 days police remand.
The court after hearing both the sides granted him seven days police remand.

Nazrul was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from city's Gulshan area on yesterday night.
Emon Hossain Gazi, a youth of Jatrabari area was shot dead by police during student movement on 5 August.
On 28 August, Md Anwar Hossain, a brother of Emon, filed a murder case with Jatrabari Police Station accusing a total of 85 people, including Nazrul Islam Majumder.
Nazrul, also chairman and founder of Nassa Group, led the BAB for nearly 17 years during the Awami League-led government since 2008.
Following the ouster of the the AL-led government in early August, the central bank removed him and his wife Nasreen Islam from the bank's board on 29 August.
Earlier on 25 August, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) ordered all banks to freeze the accounts of Exim Bank Chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder and his wife Nasrin Islam.
