The Election Commission has postponed the prescheduled election to Syedpur Municipality of Nilphamari on Thursday, few hours after the death of independent mayoral candidate and current mayor Amjad Hossain Sarkar.

The polls for the posts of mayor and ward councilors in a total of 61 municipalities, including Syedpur, were slated for 16 January.

The EC issued a media release in this regard, saying election to Syedpur Municipality was postponed, but that of other 60 municipalities will be held in due time.

Amjad Hossain Sarkar, the incumbent mayor who was running for a second term as an independent candidate, died at a private hospital in Dhaka on Thursday morning.

The deceased was a central leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He was also a former lawmaker and Upazila Parishad chairman.
