Protesting JU students asked to leave halls by 10am Monday

The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have asked the students, who entered into the halls breaking locks on Saturday during a protest, to vacate the hostels by 10am Monday.

The university authorities issued the notice, signed by acting Registrar Rahima Kaniz, at Sunday midnight.

According to the notice, some students have been staying at some halls forcibly violating government rules since Saturday evening. They are asked to leave the halls voluntarily. Otherwise the authorities will take legal action against them.

The students started a protest on Saturday to press home their several demands, a day after some fellow students were attacked by the locals of adjacent Gerua village over a cricket tournament.

At one stage of the protest, the agitating students broke the locks of some halls and took position there.

On Sunday, the protesting students gave an ultimatum to file a case against the attackers within 24 hours or the administration will face tougher actions.

250 people sued for attacking JU students
In a press briefing, the students also demanded that for the sake of students' protection, the hostels should be opened, with all utility services in place.

Later in the evening, the university authorities filed a case with Ashulia police station against 250 unknown people from Savar's Gerua village, who had attacked the university students.

On Friday evening, a group of people centring a cricket tournament asked locals from the loudspeaker of a local mosque to get whatever they had to attack students to "protect their honour". That led to a violence injuring 50 students.
