Professor Ataharul Islam receives DU Statistics alumni award
He was the first Kazi Motahar Hossain professor of the Institute of Statistical Research and Teaching at Dhaka University
Professor Ataharul Islam of the Statistics Department of Dhaka University has received the Statistics Department Alumni Association (DUSDAA) award for his contributions and achievements as an academician.
The award was delivered at a programme on Thursday night to his daughter as Professor Atahar could not attend the event due to illness.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman, who was the chief guest at the event, said Professor Ataharul Islam is not only a successful man, he is a man of values.
"He is a top biostatistician. I learned a lot from him. He is well known nationally and internationally in the statistics community," he said.
Professor Shahadat Ali Mallick of Dhaka University Department of Statistics said, "Dr Ataharul Islam was first class first in honours. He also got first class in masters. After that, he started teaching at Chattogram University. Later he joined the Department of Statistics at Dhaka University."
Professor Jane Menken from the University of Colorado, United States, said, "I think Atahar is the wealth of Bangladesh. I was blessed to be his colleague. When I first went to Bangladesh in 1984, Atahar assisted me in gathering some information. I was impressed by his skill. Atahar is the inspiration for my work."
Professor Ataharul Islam has taught at numerous renowned universities at home and abroad. He has published over a hundred research articles in international journals. He has also authored five books.
He was the first Kazi Motahar Hossain professor of the Institute of Statistical Research and Teaching, Dhaka University.
He has won many national and international awards in recognition of his work. These include the University Grants Commission Award, the Ibrahim Memorial Gold Medal and the East-West Center Award.
The programme was conducted by Professor Md Lutfor Rahman, secretary-general, DUSDAA.
