Buet decides to expel students for political affiliation
The university authorities also took decision against ragging
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) administration last decided to expel student upon finding political affiliation on the campus.
"The authorities will primarily warn the student, impose fine, suspend and finally will expel from the university," said a circular of the Students' Welfare wing of the university.
Professor Mizanur Rahman, director of Buet Students' Welfare, told The Business Standard that they hope that no political activities will be run on the campus in future, as they will be strict to implement the decision.
Buet in its decision says, "Directly or indirectly conveying (through any media) one's political, involvement; holding political posts or conducting political activities (including campaigning, participating in processions, meetings, putting up graffiti or posters, etc) in the university or associating the name of the university; forcing or inducing or inspiring others to take part in the above activities."
Decision on ragging
Meanwhile, the university authorities decided to take strict action against ragging.
The students will receive ordinary punishment, expulsion from the university for good and as appropriate, the university law officer shall file a case following due process on account of the university if any student rag another one which leads to death, serious, bodily harm, any form of disability, permanent mental imbalance or trauma, disruption of academic life of a fellow student.
Ragging involving verbal or physical abuse, extortion or financial hardship, shaming, temporary psychological harm, humiliation, threatening, disrupting academic life, planning discomfiture or being present during all of the above or commits any other offence which will be deemed by the authority as gross misconduct are offence according to the new decision.
The university will warn the ragger at first, then fine and finally suspend from the hall for good up to academic withdrawal/ barring for a period.
The offender will have to go through psychological/social counseling for a period suggested by the university counselor prior to resuming academic life.
Passively participating or being physically present during ragging, exploiting the services or engaging a fresher for completing any academic task; compelling a fresher to do errands or odd jobs or commits any other offence which will be deemed by the authority as minor misconduct.
But the Buet administration will warn then fine and finally will suspend the involved one from hall for a period.
The student may be required to take Hum 109: Social Psychology or o course on Ethics (if not offered at Buet, the student may take the course at any tertiary level institution, the university will regard it as on audit course only, the respective student advisor will ensure this and report to the Director of Student Welfare (DSW).
The university authorities banned politics of teachers and students on the university campus from October, in keeping with the demands from protesting students after the death of student Abrar Fahad.
Abrar Fahad, 22, a second-year student of Buet's electrical and electronics engineering department, was beaten to death by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League men in Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 6 night.
